| What is BellyDance? The term bellydance is a modernized, western name - around the world it is known as Raks Al Sharki (dance of the east), Oryantal Dance, Arabic Dance, Middle Eastern Dance, Danse du Ventre and Danse Orientale. The art of bellydance is actually thousands of years old in the making. Archeology teaches us that ancient cultures revered the feminine - the female form was considered the source of life. Dance and music were integral aspects of those ancient cultures. Like a moth to a flame, woman and dance were likewise attracted, creating an art form that migrated and took hold among the countless middle eastern tribes. This graceful art form was practiced for numerous reasons: celebration, communal bonding, ritual, entertainment and even childbirth preparation. We can enjoy is for the same reasons, today! Middle Eastern style dance can be sensual (after all, the female form is beautiful!) but it is historically a dance of feminine celebration - the dancer dances to bring joy to herself, her fellow dancers and her audience. |
